On February 17, COSCO SHIPPING Energy and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., ltd. covered by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited jointly developed the green methanol-powered VLCC design, which won the AIP independently issued by DNV and CCS.
This vessel type is a low/zero carbon alternative fuel vessel jointly developed by COSCO SHIPPING Energy and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry in response to the trend of low carbon. Its conceptual design is based on the latest generation of 310,000 DWT VLCC designed and built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, which is equipped with two 10,000 m³ methanol fuel tanks in total. The tanks can meet the full range fuel demand of the main engine, generator, and boiler of the whole vessel, and the endurance reaches 23,000 nautical miles. The partners jointly carried out the design and evaluation of the ship's general layout, fuel tank type selection and layout, fuel system, etc., and provided all-round technical services for the design from the aspects of compliance verification and design optimization.
At present, under the background of increasing attention to the carbon emission intensity of ship fuel in the whole life cycle, methanol fuel with relatively high maturity in terms of on-board application technology, especially the "green methanol" with great carbon reduction potential, is increasingly favored by the shipping industry. The design and approval of this type provides a novel and practical scheme for the selection of alternative fuel for large oil tankers.
