From July 4 to 7, the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance (WAIC 2024) took place at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center. COSCO SHIPPING Energy participated in the COSCO SHIPPING Corporation’s booth under the theme “Intelligence Connecting the World, Creating the Future of Shipping Technology” showcasing its AI navigation active safety project. This initiative highlights the company’s latest advancements in shipping safety technology.

As a leader in global energy transportation, COSCO SHIPPING Energy prioritizes “navigation safety” for its energy fleet. In collaboration with COSCO SHIPPING Technology, the company developed the Ship Active Safety System. This innovative system includes functions such as identifying bridge watchkeeping behavior, assessing navigational collision risks, and providing support during berthing and de-berthing maneuvers. The system also features an AR-enhanced lookout function, leveraging AI machine vision technology to automatically detect sea surface object markers. It integrates seamlessly with radar and AIS data, enhancing situational awareness. Additionally, its large-angle dual-optical camera enhances visibility in challenging conditions like fog and nighttime navigation with fog-penetrating and infrared night-vision capabilities.

At the exhibition, the Ship Active Safety System garnered significant interest from professionals and students from maritime institutions. A delegation of 27 members from the National People’s Congress and Municipal People’s Congress, focusing on “Artificial Intelligence +” visited the booth with great enthusiasm. They engaged in detailed discussions and inquiries about the system, recognizing its potential to substantially improve navigation safety and reduce maritime incidents.

The project has successfully completed real ship verification and recently received the “2024 Outstanding Case of End-to-End General Intelligence Innovation and Application” award from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (AICT).
